The rock and slag wool insulations are many a times referred to as man made vitreous fibers. These were developed in the mid-1800. The rock wool insulation is a kind of mineral wool insulation. Rock wool is part of the insulation class containing the rock wool, slag wood, and fiber glass. This class is generically known as the mineral wool insulators. The fibers of these insulators are not combustible. They have high melting temperatures which exceed the range 1800-2000 degrees Fahrenheit and hence are used to prevent fire also. These materials are utilized because of their physical and chemical properties. The rock wool insulation is used in ceiling tiles, spray fire proofing. Their residential and commercial use as insulators is due to the excellent thermal resistance. These insulators have a variety of applications like insulation in ship, pipe and process insulations, domestic appliances, and mobile homes. Recently these are being used as the horticulture growing medium.
These insulators are playing energy saving role in office buildings, homes, and business plants. These insulators help to use less energy which is economic as well as environmental friendly.
The main concern about the products is that they produce airborne dust which is not hygienic. The research for health and safety in using rock wool insulation is going on since last 70 years. The studies show that the rock wool insulations are safe to use. The airborne dust level that is produced by the rock wool is minimal. This level is less than 1 fiber/cc of air in almost all the instances. The studies of workers have not demonstrated any association of exposure to rock wool with the malignant respiratory diseases and lung cancers. The effects of rock wool on animals are also tested. The results show that there is no connection of exposure to rock wool with the malignant diseases.
The rock wool greatly enhances the quality of the indoor environment. It controls the loss or gain of heat which reduces the condensation. The rock wool also provides the best acoustic insulation. World Health Organization has concluded that the risk due to the indoor mineral fiber concentration is insignificant.
A temporary respiratory irritation is experienced by the workers since sufficient amount of rock wool is released in the air during production. This irritation is found to be subsided if the exposure to rock wool is discontinued. Some people may be more sensitive to it. There are some safety measures which are intended to minimize the potential irritation.
It is better to read the label before you open the packaging. The hints and information are quite useful. Wear gloves and sleeve clothing with loose fitting and avoid direct skin contact as much possible. Wear a dust mask to avoid the exposure to the dust of wool rock which causes temporary respiratory irritation. It is advisable to protect your eyes with suitable protection since the wool dust also may cause itching of the eyes. The first aid procedures are given on the packaging for your convenience. The waste cut offs are to be disposed off according to the local requirements. The bio-solubility of rock wool helps clear the product from lungs.
