Where can I find someone to spin wood for me?
I have an antique stool that is missing 2 spindles and a leg. I am not a carpenter, but am still trying to restore it. I have no clue where to ask for someone to make 2 matching spindles and the leg. Any one know? Thanks!
It is called "turning" the wood, not spinning it (although it does spin around in the lathe, which is the tool they use for it).
You will have to buy the timber to use for the replacements. It should be the same type of timber as the original. You need to go to a timber yard to buy that.
So take an original spindle with you. They can help you identify what type of timber would be suitable. They can also tell you who can do the turning in your local area. If you're lucky, you might find someone who works there who does woodwork as a hobby and could do it for you. But certainly they'd know of someone, as whoever in the area does this kind of work would be a customer of theirs. Go to a specialist timber yard, not the timber section of a hardware warehouse or Home Depot.
They might also be able to advise you on what type of finish to use on it, to match the original. And they'd have the white glue you'll need for attaching the new pieces firmly.
