Spinning Roving
bronze drop spindle spinner here .. need to use roving in a particular direction when you join?

I am working on a Turkish drop spindle and corridale some roving. I was more or less teaching myself. I'm separating from roving the thinner long piece of spin. My question (do not know All rights terms) was, do I have to make sure the roving piece is going in one direction? Therefore, I can I tell which end is which? thanks for trying to help the beginner-old woman. oldivoryknits

Not really. Unlike Spinning cotton which is important for the fibers to draw from the same end, you should join the oil from either end. The fact that you split your roving down is good. If you pre-drafted (attenuated) before it, It would be a good time to start. Place your hands about the length of a fiber apart and gently pull the roving to get the fiber to slide a bit. This helps when you draft as Spinning. To join, build up some twist on what story you, hold the new length at right angles to the end you are Spinning, and let the twist run in the old, drafting more if need be. BTW, if you think you need practice not to drop * * * long and skin, a Turkish spindle is ideal to spin in a supported mode, just flick it and let it spin a smooth Tabletop, then you can draft and pinch in both hands a bit more secure.
