Buprenorphine is a semi-synthetic opioid and derived from the baine, an alkaloid of poppy papaver somniferum. This is one of the medications used for detoxification, short and long term maintenance treatment. With doctor’s prescription people can use this drug at home as a pain relief tablet. The affinity level of the drug is high, which causes to buprenorphine drug addiction. Buprenorphine addiction can affect the health and cause adverse effects.
Is this addictive?
Anything, which gives pleasure to human beings they become addicted to it like TV, sports and no different in case of drugs. Many factors contribute for any drug addiction like genetics environment etc. Speed of the onset, level of pleasure and duration of action are three things for the potential of addiction. People can become addicted to buprenorphine more than water but less than any illicit drugs. Slow onset, mild effect and long duration of action are reasons for abusing the buprenorphine.
Effects of Buprenorphine
Usually buprenorphine is prescribed by doctors as a pain relief and this is approved by FDA in 2002. Addiction to this drug can lead to many adverse effects like nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, dizziness, headache, itch, dry mouth, meiosis, orthostatic hypotension and many more. With use of buprenorphine, after intravenous injection of crushed tablets, hepatic necrosis (one type of hepatitis) and hepatitis with jaundice are found. Fatal respiratory depression is contradicted with concurrent use of buprenorphine. Laboratory testing is also possible but it takes lot of time for performing the test.
Test for detection
Whenever the doctors or hospital staff wants an immediate confirmation whether patient is responding to their treatment or not. They go for conducting the on-the-spot buprenorphine detection test for the confirmation. Laboratory based evaluation can take few days to conduct the test. Highly sensitive test for testing the Buprenorphine with cut off levels are 10 ng/ml for Buprenorphine. The test kit used for detecting this drug is easy to use and provides accurate results with in 5 minutes.
