sculpey premo and III difficulties?
I bought sculpey3, baked pieces in fanforced oven, had to reduce the thermometer gauge to 120degrees c. They kinda smoked a little but came out ok after 15 min in nonpreheated oven. theres a bit of flex but they ok. Still worried about how strong it was going to be, i bought premo, made some things out of both, baked them in a gas oven for 15 and 30 mins, but they both snapped instantly and there was no flex. what is going wrong?
the flex means that it could bend without breaking. snapping in this instance means that there was zero give and any bending resulted in an immediate break, like a snap.
Well, I'm not sure what you mean by flex & snapped. But I know I have over-baked my Sculpy sometimes, they smoked & even burned (have burned marks on them) for some reason it does not affect the structure of the clay though, at least on mine, it is just as hard & durable as when I baked pieces correctly.
Sometimes the thickness of the pieces deciphers how long it should bake for, I forget what the directions say off hand, but it's so many minutes per each centimeter of thickness. I know you can under-bake Sculpy, but the good part of that is you can just re-bake it or even put more sculpy on top of it & bake it again. I'm sure you can "over-bake" it too but since I have done that, I saw no difference. I'd rather over-bake then under-bake.
You might also want to check into sealing the finished pieces with a varnish or resin to strengthen them. Sculpy isn't permanent like a bronze, but is durable & should last forever if taken care of properly.
One more thing, check to see if you got a bad batch of clay, it's doubtful, but it may be very old & has lost some of it's sustainability.
