I have some tree roses--first year and they did well. How best to protect the bud union this winter?
I read one place that said to partially dig it, lean it over, and mound over with soil. I don't want to do that for reasons not material here. Is it ok to wrap it in place with some foam rubber or something similar? Your ideas, please. Thank you.
Leaning the tree over slows the flow of sap and is just a way to stop the tree spurting into life if we get a period of warm weather during the winter.
Sounds like your tree has already established a good root system so its better not to disturb it.
There are lots of materials available to protect your tree ... fleece, newspaper, bubblewrap will all work. Newspaper will obviously need to be used with a waterproof covering such as clear plastic. You could make a round pole like tube and stuff it with newspaper or even better if you can get hold of some straw then that would also keep the frost away.
Just one other small suggestion, not sure how tall your roses are but if they are likely to get battered by the wind then it would be an idea to stake them. Two stakes with a crossbar are better than a single stake.
