Mpix offers photo mounting on single weight matboard. Would this be suitable for attaching a picture hanger...

Yes you could, but the hanger would have to be of some type of stick on type. The board is not thick enough for any type of screw in hanger. The matboard is the same size as the photo, there is no border around the photo.
A much nicer alternative is to get the canvas on double weight matboard. The canvas is sandwiched between the photo and heavy matboard, then bonded together. The photo takes on a canvas texture. Really looks GREAT, and is very durable. More expensive of course. I guess it just depends on what the "art event" is. Keep in mind, a professional looking, well presented piece will always make a better impression with more likelihood of selling.
