Can mould (mold) escape from a petri dish?
This sounds a little funny, I admit, but I brought home a petri dish from biology class with some really really mouldy bread in it, and I'm keeping it on my bookshelf to monitor its progress (I like to take my work home with me, yes). It's sellotaped shut, but it really is very mouldy. Could it possibly escape the dish and grow outside of it? And does it pose any hazards to me or my books in its current position- for example, does it release poisonous gases or attract vermin?

it does "flower" and produce mold spores.
generally, mold that likes bread, does not like your lungs -- it's a very different environment.
i'd assume that if your books are dry, they'll be fine.
if they're not, it will be a different mold that attacks them.'
both pronunciations are correct.
