What type of glaze or paint should be used for ceramics?
I got a kiln for Christmas and have finally gotten it hooked up, at school i did wheel throwing unfortunately i wont be able to get a wheel until the summer so in the mean time i am casting molds. This is new for me and i was wondering what type of glazes or paints are used to do detail work. I know the glazes i used for pottery cant be used because they run and i was not sure what other types there are or where to find them any help would be appreciated.
if you want detail you can look at underglaze pencils. You can also look at sgraffito techniques which work with different colored slip (example:http://www.penfieldgallery.com/cards/RonS.jpg) and engobes.
You can also work with oxides stains. As they don't contain any or not much glass former they don't run.
If you don't want very fine detail you can use the usual glazes as well.
For getting some idea what you can do I would go to the library and look at their ceramics books. They will have a lot of examples and you can pick out the techniques you like.
I would look if you have a ceramic store or ceramic studio somewhere reasonably close to where they live. Usually if they sell you glazes they are also pretty good at giving you recommendations for glazes which might work well for your specific project and clay.
Laguna clay sells a wide variety of glazes and raw oxides.
