how much of a hem do I need to allow when making curtains?
Do I have to double the hem over or is once enough? I am using the metal hoops on fixed tape at the top and am trying to work out what is best for the top and bottom hem. Any proper help is appreciated, not silly comments, get enough of them from the kids!!!
I'd use a double hem at the top - simply because the metal hoops need a little reinforcement. It might not be right, but I turn over about 1 cm (zig-zagged at the edge of course), and press it. I then turn over however wide your curtain tape is plus 1 cm and sew along the folded edge (hope I'm making sense here!)
As for the bottom, I usually hang my curtains, unhemmed, for a few days for them to find their own length. Again, I'd use a double hem (1cm plus about 2 cm) to provide a bit of weight to the hem, so they hang nicely and draw with panache!
