I have a plant with long leaves that look dead and a really long stem with a bulb at they end any ideas?
bulbs are beginning to flower and look purple or bluish in colour. There are no leaves on the stem just at the bottom.

this sounds like an allium, the height of these vary greatly, from 8" to 5' + tall, but as a guess yours is about 2' tall? once these end flowering, you will end up with a seed ball, not unlike a dandelion, leave them "in situ", and next season you might have 2 or 3 or more, colours vary but a lot are mauve.
