How do you tell if an old bone knife handle, antler, horn or plastic?
I was given an old Western (Camillus) brand of knife at least forty years old. How can I tell what the material is used to handle? The knife has a large (3 7 / 8 ") two bladed stock knife with leather sheath.
The end of a sizzling straight pin, when touched in a place that is inconspicuous melt plastic but NOT in effect bone or antler, and very little in the horns. Furthermore, the horns are smooth and often many colors when used with a knife handle. Bone often takes on a patina similar color which yellows with great age and can appear in it are dirty with tea or coffee. The bone handle is usually also well done. Antler handles most - often show some of the roughage found around the base of the antler with warty nodules and grooves from the blood vessels, etc. In the rare event that you can handle also ivory, ivory has growth rings similar to those of a tree trunk or branch. You need a magnifying glass to see it, but if it is colored, IS them there. (See the side or tip of the handle.) More wood, the only other material I am aware of those used for knife handles are mother-of-pearl from abalone and other large, thick shells of the sea. Without seeing the knife, but have seen others like it, I was betting on either antler (first choice) or horns.
