Most wood carving tools are cutting tools. Every cutting tool has at least one bevel. This is the sloping surface to the edge there. But it's more of salience a sloping surface. It is really a cutting angle. So the bevel supports a specific cutting angle that determines how the tool can be used. Experienced carvers know about bevels and how they affect cutting efficiency.
If you only start as a wood carver, and you go to purchase a knife tools for the first time, here are some things you should know.
? Some carving tools leave the manufacturer without a bevel. This means you will have to be one to make the cutting angle, which determines the shape of the bevel. Many experienced wood carvers Newer equipment in this way because they want to put the cutting angles themselves. They do not want to remake an edge.
? Non-beveled edges are only recommended for those wood carvers who already know How sharper knife or similar types of cutting tools. Do not just assume that the bevel is correct. Know your needs, ie, the specific activities knife, and with the right tools. You should not rush it.
The cutting angle of your carving tools, or the length of the bevel, determines the strength of wood you can carve. In its very basic, the greater the cutting angle, the steeper and shorter the bevel. More angle means less cutting force on the side. The stronger the edge, the more difficult the wood cut. What does all this mean?
? If you're going to cut soft woods, you will find that a small angle to the cutting edge of your tool. This is a very thin edge and makes for a huge bevel (a long backwards slope).
? If you are going to cut hard woods, you'll want a large cutting angle on the edge of your tool. This is to a thicker, slanted edge and a small bevel (short and steep).
This is another important point to keep in mind. The size of your cutting angle edge can determine how much control you have when knife.
? If you are using a tool knife with a small cutting angle and a large bevel, more than your hands can rest on wood. This provides better control and, therefore, better knife. Unfortunately, your edge is not as strong as it can.
? If you use a knife with a large cutting tool angle and a small bevel, less Some of your hands can rest on wood. It can make carving somewhat awkward because you get much better control your hands. This is a common home. To you a powerful edge that cracks fast but the mistake is easily made.
Because we are talking about bevels, here are three basic types of the bevels that can be found in wood carving: straight (square) bevels, rounded bevels (convex) and hollow (concave) bevels.
