What is the iron requirement for donating blood for the Red Cross?
I have regularly been donating blood for the past couple years, and today my doctor told me that I have an iron deficiency. He prescribed iron supplements to me. I am curious now, are the iron requirements for the Red Cross lower than that in the acceptable range or could this deficiency be a new development? (I last donated blood about 1 1/2 or 2 months ago, and I am not on my period.)
They have the same standards as any other blood bank.
The ideal thing to do is to donate only twice a years, because it takes 6 months to restore the iron lost, red blood cells recover back to normal in a few weeks, if you've donating more than this, it's very likely that you have iron deficiency.
You shouldn't donate blood not because you're a risk for the patient, but because it would mean exposing you to the risk of developing anemia. (first comes iron deficiency, then anemia)
