Frosted glass is made by sandblasting or acid etching of clear sheet glass. I think you are asking about the "acid etching". This process uses an aqueous solution of hydrofluoric acid (HF). The actual etchant used is a solution of concentrated hydrofluoric acid (49%), water, and a buffering salt, ammonium fluoride (NH4F), the ratio of about 1:6:4. This solution is defined as buffered hydrofluoric acid, or BHF. The buffering agent is added to maintain a continuous pH as HF is soon on his reaction to silica (SiO2): 4HF + SiO2 => SiF4 (aq) + H2O [NOTE: Hydrofluoric acid is very DANDEROUS!
