How do I save my deer hide?
I always want to save the deer hide (including feathers) after the hunting season but I'm not sure how to do it myself. I had a friend who said something about soaking in a bucket with Borax and water for 1-2 days. Then scrape out meat and fat out, then salt it for 1-2 days and then something about a hide conditioner. But I can not remember everything and I get ahold of him to ask him. Any tips?
The best thing to do if you want to have tanned is to generously cover it with Non-Iodized salt mixed with alum. 'Work in fur and flesh side well and roll up the hide. It will draw moisture and alum will set the hair and keep it from emission. You must find a tannery to send it in because it was just too much work to brown it yourself. There are tanning kit availabel from areas such as (www.cabelas.com Cabel's) if you really think you want to do it yourself. It does not hide the soaking of the solution is the task, it is going all traces of flesh and fat from the flesh side before tanning the hide and then working with the tanned hide over something like the end of a baseball bat to break up the collagen in the hide and make it soft. If you do the last step, you will end up in a hide as hard cardboard. It is much work and don'tr you really save much, if anything, more than just sending it to a tannery. I tanned a deer hide once and that was enough for me. Way too much work and do not really save anything over sending it to a tannery. Now I just send them to a tannery and make them all hard work. After a few months, they send me back I keep all nice and tanned and soft butter. I put them away and save them for a few years and then have made good from it like a jacket, gloves, etc.
