Hummingbird feeders dispense liquid, not seed. The mainstay of a hummingbird food consists of insects and spiders. The liquid in your feeder is more like "emergency food" to your bird. In a typical day a hummingbird collect nectar from about 100 different flowers. They avoid flowers with nectar containing less than 25% sugar.
History of hummingbird feeders
No one knows for certain how long people are trying to attract hummingbirds to their garden. Probably for as long as mankind had appreciation for beauty. Hummingbird is certainly around for a long while. Humming birds fossilized remains recently found in Germany date back 30 million years! Today, hummingbirds only exist in the new world. In their lightning speed and precious iridescent feathers like they always captured the human imagination. One of the mysterious geoglyphs, (huge Photo Etched in silt in the Plain of Nazca Peru), is a hummingbird. So wide is only visible from the air, hummingbird it date back to 200BC-600AD and This is certainly the largest hummingbird in the world.
The first commercial hummingbird feeder was introduced by the 1950 novelty Audubon Company of Medina, New York. It is a type of glass tube feeder and immediately became popular in the U.S. It was designed by Laurence J. Webster of Boston, as a gift for his wife, who read an article in a 1928 edition of The National Geographic Magazine. The story mentioned that it is possible to feed hummingbirds from a small glass bottle. Webster designed a feeder and is made by a glassblower at MIT. The August, 1947 edition of National Geographic Magazine featured an article by Harold Edgerton who, with his new invention strobe flash, photographed hummingbirds in Webster's feeder. Others, such as they say, is history. Considering Webster's success, people should listen more closely to their wives!
Modern hummingbird feeders
During the 50 plus years that followed the introduction of the first feeder, many styles and designs have come and gone. Today, feeders are usually made of ceramic, glass, plastic, or a combination of these materials. For the most part, they are divided into two types, bowl feeders and bottle feeders.
Here are some important consideration when choosing a hummingbird feeder;
Color is important. The red color of choice. Most of the flowers natural source of nectar a hummingbird's are red, pink or coral color. Do not use a feeder with yellow parts, yellow attracts bees.
Select a feeder designed to Bee-proof unless you want to attract bees instead of hummingbirds.
Select a feeder that offers a hummingbird dinner. While hummingbirds pinapadaan normal in front of a flower during feeding, they are much like the rest as they feed. As they stay in the individual flowers for mere seconds, a small gathering nectar there, they will remain in the feeder until they have drunk their fill. Treat them to a sit-down meal.
A feeder to a reservoir bottle protects the nectar from the bacterial infection, contamination from insects and deterioration. It is important to protect the health of the hummingbird's.
Select a feeder that is easy to disassemble, clean and refill. Maintaining a supply of fresh, clean nectar is vitally important to the well being of your hummingbirds.
Select a feeder with an ant moat, or similar device to keep the insects from contaminating the nectar in your feeder.
Fancy glass and ceramic feeders are attractive, but because of their design are difficult to clean and wide ant, that attracts bees, ants and wasps. The insects can be trapped in the feeder, contaminating the nectar.
The National Audubon Society recommends cleaning your feeder once a week. To clean your feeder use ¼ cup of white vinegar to 1 cup of water. After cleaning, rinse the feeder 3 times in fresh water.
Placing your feeder
Where you hang your feeder is almost as important as feeder you choose. Here are some tips about hummingbird feeder placement.
Put your feeder where it is noticed hummingbirds and will be easily available to them. Do not worry if the bird does not appear immediately. Hummingbirds are very inquisitive. They will find it.
If possible, do not put your feeder near your window. They can slander themselves by the flying glass. If you have other options, the picture area, or decals, a bigger bird on your window to prevent from getting hummingbirds too close.
Certainly place your feeder where you can see it. The antics of the small miracles of nature is better than anything you see on cable TV - unless you are watching a show about hummingbirds.
If change your old feeder with a new one to leave the old one hanging empty beside the new feeder for a while, to recognize it hummingbirds as a new source of food.
