Can you mend a dry clay piece by using wet clay?
I was in my pottery class and I knocked over a really nice piece! I didn't tell anyone (yea I know I should have admitted it but I'm scared too). I was just wondering if the kid can fix the pot or if he/she has to scrap it and start all over?!? We use red brown clay and it hasn't been fired yet but its really dry. Can he just paste it on with wet clay??
If the piece were still a little bit wet, that might work, but since the piece is really dry it won't hold up. Once the piece gets in the kiln, the wetter clay that you'd use to patch up what you broke would fire more slowly than the dry clay, and it would crack all over again. It would also be really obvious that you'd done something to try and fix it because the wet clay would be a totally different color and it might crack even while drying but before being put in the kiln.
If I were you, I would just admit that you did it and apologize really genuinely... maybe bring them some little "I'm sorry" gift, too, just so that they are inclined to be forgiving.
