How can I lighten stained wood?
My kitchen walls are large boards of knotty pine wood with a reddish-orangish cherry stain. No kitchen cabinets yet. I like the look but it makes the kitchen look dark. I'd like to lighten it a bit.
Can I paint over the stain?
Is there some paint that will let the wood grain show through?
Is there something other than paint that can be applied to lighten the stain color?

What you need to do is a color wash over the Knotty pine.
1. Sand it lightly.
2. Buy oil based whiteor some light color paint. Benjamin Moore is the best.
3.Buy oil based faux finishing liquid, and oil based polyurathane.
4. Buy oil painting brushes. They say "For Stain."
5. Mix 1 part of paint with 2 parts of glazing liquid and polyurathane.
6. Lightly coat the pine wood with long up and down strokes.
You will also need: Paint Thinner (1 gal.), rags, and drop cloth. Oils take about 24 hours to dry, so close off the rest of the house to prevent off gassing from making it hard to breathe.
