How can I use unspun roving in a crochet project?
I bought unspun roving to practice trying to spin it but I was unsuccessful. I like the roving color blend and want to still use it but didn't know how to incorporate it in my crocheting. Any ideas?
Attenuate the roving by taking a length (3 feet is good, just break it off about there) and splitting it lengthwise (just pull the roving about in half at the top, and work it down, then in half or thirds again) until its about the same size as the yarn you'd use. After attenuating a half into thirds, though, take the roving from one end with your hands about a bit more than a fiber length apart (pull a few fibers out to see how long they are) and gently pull them out to the width needed. Then use it like you would lightly spun yarn (carefully now, it doesn't rip out easily) and crochet it. Not previously attenuating the roving may be one of the reasons you had difficulty spinning, too. Most rovings are too thick to spin without attenuating or pre-drafting. If you were drop spindling, try some of this attenuated roving and balance your spindle on a table top until you have it down.
