When you come to Nottingham, you become immersed in the clubs and bars around it colorful districts of the city. But you may not know the other world's deep interest in the ground.
Under the city Nestles a complex network of over 200 man-made caves. In fact, Nottingham original known as 'Place of Caves', with records dating this underground existence back in 900AD. Between 11th and 19th century the cubbies are even used as crude housing to a law that banned this practice.
The soft sandstone underneath Nottingham Sherwood made it simple for people beyond the age of hand-carve cellars rooms for stores, factories and housing. Although there is a major project underway to map the hidden network, it is thought that up to 50 caves remain unexcavated and a further 75 could be destroyed by the redevelopment of the city.
You will see many signs of Nottingham's real under ground scenes scattered throughout the city center. The Broadmarsh Shopping Center conceals the most prominent example, an entire "City of Caves" tucked under. Currently, you can explore its ancient corridors and remember about their history reconstructed using clues from the artefacts found within. Your trip begins in medieval tannery, a legacy of Nottingham's leather trade way back in 1250.
An exhibit of Drury Hill, the site of some of the worst slums in the 19th century, recreates the terrible conditions endured by the family living in one room without sanitation. Is also the evidence of the caves' most calling - World War II air raid shelter. Explore the underground presence of those seeking refuge from the barrage of 500 bombs fell directly within the city the blitz.
Hot-stage over Castle for more man-made caves and secret passageways from medieval times. Mortimer's Hole is Nottingham's most famous structure under the ground, a vertical arrow from Castle Rock down to a tunnel leading to Brewhouse Yard. This local legend dates back to 1330, when a group of infiltrated conspirators Nottingham Castle to get the Earl of Mortimer, lover of Queen Isabel.
The Park boasts seven storeys of underground passageways and steps Park down the tunnel, a hidden passage for the spirit of horse traffic going to the Derby Road. But the main use for the caves are as beer cellars. A good example is found in Flying Horse Hotel, where three caverns are linked by an arch-shaped tunnel. Peek below Elizabethan mansion Wollaton Hall and see his own wine cellars adjoin an ancient tunnel linking it to Wollaton Village - perhaps a transit route for goods.
The extraordinary example how Nottingham's caves are designed for this purpose was found in Derby Road, where you'll see one in a 20-foot ceiling for a wagon-making workshop.
To see the natural caves that may have inspired the inhabitants carve their world underground, head of Creswell crags near Sherwood Forest. The historic limestone cliff conceals evidence of life during the Ice Age, Britain's only examples of cave art and 120,000 years old signs of thick Mammoths, Reindeer, Bison and rhinos.
However much you do in Nottingham, without a visit to the caves, your visit will have barely scratched above.
