What is the best type of apple to use for apple pie?
I am trying to make a delicious apple pie for my boyfriend....the first one did not turn out and I used McIntosh apples....I am wondering if there is a better type of apple to use. Also any good suggestions are welcome! Thank you:)
Typically the apple used for apple pie is Granny Smith.
Apples like Red Delicious and Golden Delicious aren't as good for cooking since they tend to turn into apple sauce when cooked. With firm flesh apples like Granny Smith, the apple retains some of it's shape without disintegrating.

Among the really good pie apples are Jonathan, Stayman-Winesap, Cox's Orange Pippin, and Jonagold, all of which provide a good mix of sweetness and tartness. Other sweet choices are Braeburn, Fuji, Mutsu, Pink Lady, Suncrisp, Rome Beauty, and Empire. Good tart baking apples include Idared, Macoun, Newton Pippin, and Northern Spy.
