African rosewood, also known as Bubinga, comes from Côte d'Ivoire, Gabon and Cameroons. Bubinga is bright and rich, varying greatly in color from pinks, oranges, reds and dark browns. Heartwood may be pink with red-purple veins and darker purple stripes. African rosewood timber has interlocking grain, is more difficult and weight than Brazilian rosewood, and fine-medium output. Bubinga's Pinkish pink cast is oxidize to a Dark Brown-red over time. African rosewood be plain or mottled. Khaya mahogany is found in tropical Africa and Madagascar. Khaya mahogany is light pink to medium brown to red brown in color. Khaya mahogany is the dominant Sapele mahogany, another African mahogany used on acoustic guitar building. This is a moderately rough output which is sometimes interlocked, sometimes straight. Interlocked grain produces a striped figure on quartersawn surfaces (best for guitars). Like most species mahogany Khaya mahogany guitars are warm and clear with good balance. Other mahogany Luthiers are familiar with Sapele mahogany. Entandrophragma Cylindricum is located in West, Central and Eastern Africa rain forests, the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Uganda, Zaire and Tanzania. Sapele mahogany timber has salmon pink heartwood and pale yellow sapwood. The pink heartwood can change to red brown with age. Sapele mahogany wood is made of closely interlocking dryer where the changes in direction and can be regular line. Furthermore it can have a huge irregular pores, interspersed with Bands of small pores. Wavy grain produces too severe fiddleback or mottled figures to make real 3D look. Sapele mahogany tonewood is weight than other African mahogany, but not as strong. Ovangkol is relatively new on acoustic guitar building. Guibourtia Ehie, also known as Mozambique, Shedua, Amazoue and Amazakoue are located in West Africa, Ivory Coast, Ghana, southern Nigeria and Gabon. Ovangkol timber heartwood is yellow brown to deep chocolate brown with gray black stripes. Ovangkol timber of rice is interlocked and texture is moderately rough. Tonally, Ovangkol back and sides sits between strong and rosewood highs of Maple. Padouk is a deep colored wood also known as Pterocarpus Soyauxii, MBE, Mbil, Mututi, Ngula and Bosulu. Padauk or Padouk is found in tropical Central and West Africa, extending from southwest Nigeria to Zaire. Timber is clearly orange or almost crimson and as guitar tonewood is good, straight grain, slightly harder and more weight than rosewood Indian, with fine to medium texture. Padouk timber oxidizes to a darker, rich purple-brown over time. Padauk guitars have a strong tone. Wenge is a deep dark chocolate brown wood found in Zaire, Cameroon and Gabon, Africa. Millettia Laurentii tonewood tan is evenly spaced, fine black veins and dark light brown and Bands. Wenge acoustic guitar back and sides timber has a tight straight grain, across the width and a rough texture. Wenge guitar tonewood is weight in East Indian and Brazilian rosewood, and like most African Wenge timbers a guitar has a nice strong tone. Zebrawood is named for the stripes are great. Microberlinia Brazzavillensis are located in Africa, Gabon and Cameroons. Zebrawood timber has bold colors consistent with drawing a total gold-brown, yellows and dark browns. Lumber is rough very coarse structure of rice, and similar limit on East Indian rosewood. Tonally Zebrawood has the same resonance as East Indian rosewood. The cream of African timbers for acoustic guitar building is African Blackwood, which is actually a rosewood. Dalbergia Melanoxylon Purplish black is dark brown with black streaks. African Blackwood timber of rice was fined and polishes well and others did better than Brazilian rosewood. African Blackwood tonewood has excellent response, and the taptone is absurd.
